Overview

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), founded in 1895, is a world-renowned specialist in the social sciences. It is one of the most international universities in the UK, with about 50% of its 11,000 students coming from outside the UK, representing over 140 countries. As a member of the prestigious Russell Group, which represents 24 leading research universities in the UK, LSE has established a reputation for academic excellence, particularly in economics, political science, law, sociology, and international relations. In 2025, LSE was named the best university in the UK by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

LSE is known for its rigorous admissions process and for attracting some of the brightest and most ambitious students worldwide. Its British Library of Political and Economic Science is the largest social science library in the world, with a collection of over four million printed items. It is highly utilised, with a borrowing rate significantly higher than the national average, reflecting the intensity of study at LSE.

The School also boasts strong career outcomes for its graduates, who benefit from the institution's reputation and close links with major employers. LSE graduates enjoy some of the highest starting salaries and employment rates of any university in the UK. Many notable alumni have held significant positions in politics, academia, and business.

16 Nobel Prize winners have been associated with LSE, either as students or faculty, with honours spanning disciplines such as economics, peace, and literature. LSE regularly ranks among the top universities in both national and international league tables.

Services for International Students

With around two-thirds of its students coming from outside the UK, LSE is one of the most multicultural universities in the world. This diversity is a key part of its identity, and the University takes pride in offering tailored support for its international student body.

LSE’s Student Services Centre provides a comprehensive range of support services to all students. International students can receive advice on visas, immigration, and financial matters, as well as guidance on adjusting to life in the UK. The Centre is also the go-to hub for queries regarding courses, assessments, examinations, and graduation ceremonies. The LSE Students' Union has a number of student-led cultural societies that help new students connect with others from their home country or region, making the transition to life in London smoother and more enjoyable.

LSE offers pre-sessional English language programmes for non-native speakers to improve their language skills before starting their degree. Ongoing academic support is available during term time through workshops and tutoring.

Accommodation

LSE guarantees a place in University-managed accommodation for all first-year undergraduates who apply by the May deadline. There are various accommodation options, including catered and self-catered halls, and LSE also has partnerships with other University of London institutions to offer a wider range of living options in central London.

The Accommodation Office is available to assist students in finding affordable housing. With London being one of the most expensive cities in the world, the team is dedicated to helping students secure cost-effective and convenient places to live. Many of the halls are located within walking distance of the campus, ensuring easy access to classes and the city’s cultural attractions.

Location

LSE’s central London location is one of its major advantages. The campus is situated near Covent Garden and the River Thames, placing students in the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic cities. This proximity allows students easy access to countless cultural, historical, and recreational sites, including museums, theatres, and parks, many of which are free to visit. LSE students are surrounded by the vibrancy of London, with opportunities to experience its diverse cultural scene, while also benefiting from its status as a global financial and political hub.

London’s five international airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, are all within an hour's travel from the city centre. LSE’s prime location also opens doors to numerous internships, networking events, and career opportunities. The university has strong relationships with many leading organisations in finance, politics, law, and media, providing students with invaluable access to professional experience and career-building opportunities.

Alumni

LSE’s alumni network is extensive and influential, with more than 30 current or former heads of state and politicians among its graduates. Notable political figures include John F. Kennedy, David Rockefeller, and George Soros, alongside many other leaders in finance, government, and international organisations. LSE is known for producing graduates who go on to make significant contributions to academia, economics, and global affairs.
